Ebook Okinawan Goju Ryu - Fundamentals of Shorei Kan Karate

Born on May 20, 1917, in Naha City, Okinawa, Seikichi Toguchi studied karate under Master Chojun Miyagi and his assistant, Mr. Seko Higa. During World War II, Mr. Toguchi served the Japanese Imperial Army as an electrical engineer in Southeast Asia. He returned to Okinawa in 1946 to find the land barren and devastated, the people starving and depressed. Recognizing his homeland's need for vital reconstruction, he devoted himself to rebuilding Okinawa. When a new dojo was finally established from out of the rubble, the Okinawan Athletic Association offered him a teaching position. He accepted their offer and taught for two years in what was then the only karate dojo in all post-war Okinawa.

When, in 1952, Master Miyagi organized the Goju-Ryu Associa-tion to oversee the establishment and maintenance of the Goju-Ryu style, Mr. Toguchi was named its executive director. Two years later, the Goju-Ryu Association became the Goju-Kai Federation and Mr. Toguchi was elected vice-president.

Among his other honors, Mr. Toguchi includes the Japan Karate Federation's invitation to participate as the Okinawan master at their first opening demonstration and his participation in the first world karate tournament held in Tokyo in 1969.

At present, Mr. Toguchi divides his time between teaching at his schools in Tokyo and Koza City.
